And Business is Good

Today, while listening to "your home in the country 104.5" (a station that I'm pretty sure relies on the djs to bring their own cd collections to the station - why else would you hear 14 Carrie Underwood songs in a row?), I heard an advertisement for Ft. Atkinson's Bergey Jewelry and Archery shop.

Did I hear that correctly?  No, couldn't have... but after detailing the fine selection of gold and diamond offerings, yup, the ad went on "and downstairs featuring a full collection for all of your archery needs."

Last week my dad tried to pay for his hair cut with a fifty dollar bill.  "We can't break a fifty," the barber told him, and so he had to walk to the Poplar Grove Bank to get change.  Years and years ago, when what is now the old Poplar Grove Bank was brand new, the barber actually shared space with the bank.  That is, the bankers were worried that the bank would not be profitable enough to pay for its new building and so rented office space to the barber.  Eventually the barbershop relocated to share space with a tractor dealership; too bad, for my dad, good news for those who want a lawnmower and a trim.

In Durand, the family that owns the funeral home also owns the used furniture store.  Reminds me of the funeral director who made Josh's grandpa an offer on his 1985 Cadillac at Josh's grandma's funeral.

Further reminds me of the other funeral director in town who also plays the bagpipes.  True story - whether you are Scot or not or want him to or not, (your funeral, you don't care, right?), if he is in charge of your funeral he will play the pipes.  (Causes everyone to feel more mournful, but it's an odd way to arrange your own recital.)  He will also do weddings, though I feel he casts a certain gloom over the proceedings.

A few years ago, Josh and I visited Prairie Du Chien, where our window shopping took us past a store featuring liquor, guns, and taxidermy.  I'll tell you what, it's everything you need in Prairie Du Chien!
